Welcome to the

BriarPatch Family Life Education Centre

The BriarPatch Family Life Education Centre is a
registered non-profit organization proudly serving
Sherwood Park and surrounding areas since 1996.

Community supports

We have offered many different programs over the years, always with the goal of connecting community members, fostering strong relationships and increasing family resiliency. These programs grow and change as the needs of the community evolve.

Currently, we offer a variety of support groups to meet different needs, including baby loss (H.E.A.R.T.S.), child loss (The Compassionate Friends), general grief and Expressive Arts for Grieving Children, Teens and their Families, as well as our Grandparents As Parents program for those who are parenting a second time around but with their grandchildren this time.

About Us

The BriarPatch Family Life Education Centre (F.L.E.C.) was created on October 20th, 1996 to deliver programming to families in the Greater Strathcona County region. BriarPatch F.L.E.C. incorporated as a Non-Profit Society on February 12, 1997 and a Registered Canadian Charity in October of 2006.

Our first program was the H.E.A.R.T.S. Baby Loss Support Program, which today continues to support anyone touched by the loss of a precious baby during pregnancy or anytime after birth.

Over the years we have offered a variety of programming including a Toy and Resource Lending Library, birthing classes (Birth Roots), breastfeeding support (La Leche League), Postpartum Depression Support, Grandparents As Parents Support (G.A.P.), homeschooling support (Homeschool Club) and general parenting counseling.

In 2008, the BriarPatch created the community preschool project. The BriarPatch Community Preschool was started to fill a need for quality play-based preschool programming in our community. We also welcomed a partnership with the Pilgrims Hospice Society to offer Expressive Arts for Grieving Children, Teens and Families at our Centre as a collaboration.

As we look towards 2020, the BriarPatch Family Life Education Centre is solid and sustainable, and our board of directors and staff are excited to see what this new year will bring to our programs and our community.
