At the BriarPatch Community Preschool, we believe that parents are their children’s first teachers. By offering a quality Parent Participation Program, we are helping build stronger families, and ultimately, stronger communities. It is expected that parents (or other another adult caregiver) are in the classroom to volunteer with the children approximately once every 2 months. Younger siblings are welcome to attend with a volunteering parent!

Parents actively participate in their child’s classroom and are supported by the staff and other parents. We provide a support network for parents where they can not only increase their confidence in child-rearing techniques, but also develop a closer, more understanding relationship with their children through this shared experience.

My Teaching Philosphy:

“Children are energetic, caring, and capable human beings that are learning to navigate the world through their senses and their experiences.

By providing an open and engaging classroom environment that involves families and the greater community we allow for children to know that they are important and contributing members of our world.

Smiles, laughter, understanding, and being open to trying new things are my day to day goals while we work on the academics which come much easier when children know that they are cared for and supported.”

Our Philosophy

We offer a hands on, developmentally appropriate, curriculum based on current knowledge of early childhood education best practices. We strive to be a environment where children can learn through play, grow at their own pace and, above all else, feel that school is a fun and exciting place to be!

We use and interchange a variety of concepts to enhance each child’s experience in our program, including:

  1.  A learning-through-play environment, a key component required in all preschools licensed by Alberta Children’s Services.

  2. Additional curriculum that features the Reggio Emilia Method and some aspects of Waldorf Education.

  3. Early literacy is offered daily in the group setting and our preschoolers love to explore the colourful selections of books on their own as well. For those children who are close to entering kindergarten, our teaching focus changes to prepare them for the academic world they will soon enter.

Our Staff

Miss Chynna is our Teacher’s Assistant and has been surrounded by children all her life. Chynna began “working” at the BriarPatch at the age of 2 and has been an active volunteer in the County ever since.

Growing up in a large family, she has a way with the little ones and loves watching them grow and change. With her Level 1 achieved, she is working towards future goals while continuing to support our fun and interactive daily routine.

She is an avid reader, writer and skilled editor on her dad’s film projects. She loves all things “British” and her little puppy, Lola.

Miss Meghan is our Teacher and heart and soul of the BriarPatch classroom. She brings a wonderful blend of education and experience to our team having graduated from Concordia University with her Bachelor of Education, with a focus on Early Education. Meghan is known for blending play with student-lead learning opportunities and fostering a healthy sense of self and community. In 2015 her methods were recognized for their innovation earning her the Alberta Award of Excellence in Early Childhood Education.

Meghan brings a volunteer spirit into the classroom and shares her love of community with the children. Outside the classroom she gives her time and efforts to support agencies like the Terry Fox Foundation, Lurana Shelter, Kinsmen Dream Wheels and the Special Olympics.

Her goal for the children and their parents is to remind them that childhood is a gift and should not be rushed. A mix of early learning opportunities is provided to help children get ready for their own unique journey through education as they head to “big” school.

Cheryl handles all administrative matters. She is the co-founder and Executive Director of the BriarPatch Family Life Education Centre.

As a mother and educator, she strives to provide the type of centre whose own family were fortunate to be part of when her children were small. When that centre closed, she knew that creating a new one would be a long journey but a worthwhile use of time to offer a unique and family-centered environment.

Cheryl is supported by her active family and a Board of Directors who continue to allow the dream to unfold.
